New South Wales

New South Wales is where the first settlers landed, and as such is the birthplaces of modern Australia. You won’t want to miss the vibrant urban charms of Sydney, one of the world’s favorite cities, but do allow a few days to discover the rest of the state. The wine-producing region of Hunter Valley and the stunning Blue Mountains both have definite appeal , or head up the coast to discover laid-back seaside resorts where the day’s main decisions depend on whether the surf’s up.

Queensland

Affectionately know as the ‘Sunshine State’, Queensland offers something for everyone; from the popular holiday resorts of the Gold and Sunshine coasts, to the beautiful unspoiled scenery of the Whitsunday Islands; and from the lush tropical rain-forests and sugar-cane plantations around Cairns and Port Douglas, to the stunning Great Barrier Reef lying just offshore. Victoria

Compared to the other states in Australia, Victoria is pocket-sized which makes its easy to visit all its sightseeing and touring highlights. The cosmopolitan city of Melbourne rivals Sydney in the fields of culture, shopping, dining and entertainment. Victoria is also blessed with one of the greatest scenic coastal driving routes in the world. the Great Ocean Road , introducing you to dramatic coastline once attached to Antarctica. With no fewer than 10 national parks and the world-famous Yarra Valley wine region amongst its other attractions, it’s fair to say that Victoria reigns supreme.

Despite its small size, Victoria’s climate does vary across the state, with the north generally drier and warmer than the south. There are four distinctly marked seasons, ranging from hot summers (Dec-Feb), to cool winters (Jun-Aug), with some snowfall on the mountains to the north of the state.

Tasmania

Tasmania is an island state of great scenic beauty with a rugged coastline, snow capped mountains, deserted beaches and fabulous gourmet cuisine. The island is rough;y the same sizes as Ireland, which makes it manageable size for touring or self-drive holiday. It lies just 150 miles off the southeast coat of Australia, and flying into Hobart or Launceston is as easy as travelling anywhere on the mainland. Tasmania has a temperate climate quite similar to the UK, with four distinct seasons and none of the intense heat experienced elsewhere in Australia. With long, light evenings and pleasant temperatures, the summer months of Dec-Mar are perhaps beast, though the west coast rain forests can be wet year-round. The inland mountains receive a dusting of snow each winter.

South Australia

Australia’s best kept secret, South Australia, known as the ‘festival state’, lays claim to some unexpected facts. 50% of all Australian wine and 80% of premium wine comes from South Australia. The state boasts the finest nature reserve, Kangaroo Island, a ‘zoo with out fences’ an Eyre Peninsula, superb for aquatic experiences. The opal mining town of Coober Pedy is the only underground city in Australia, and William Creek is the smallest Australian town on the world’s largest working cattle station. You’ll also find some of Australia’s most diverse wildlife and be amazed by the planet’s oldest landscapes, all easily accessible from the elegant and graceful gateway city of Adelaide.

Southern South Australia has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters( Jun-Aug) and warm, dry summers (Dec-Mar). Very hot conditions can be experienced during summer in the northern/outback parts of the state, where the days can be extremely hot but the desert nights chilly.

Northern Territory

Stretching from the desert heart of Australia (the Red Centre) to the northern tropics around Darwin (the Top End), the Northern Territory offers some of the most breathtaking and contrasting scenery you’ll ever see. The towering presence of Uluru casts a magical spell on all who visit, but is rivalled by other Outback destinations such as dramatic Kings Canyon, and by the World Heritage wilderness and wetlands of Kakadu National Park.

Summers ( Nov-Mar) are very hot in the Red Centre, with temperatures upwards of 35°c, although the desert environment means chilly evenings in winter (Jun-Aug). Around Darwin and Kakadu, the Top End starts and ends the year with balmy temperatures and tropical rains, whilst towards the middle of the year the humidity levels drop and the days are warm and sunny.

Western Australia

By far the largest of the states, Western Australia covers everything you imagine an Australian holiday to be. There are remote tropical islands; dry read dusty desert land on Aboriginal soil; sheer rock formations in the form of deep gores whose waterfalls plunge into refreshing swimming holes; and wild coastline home to whale sharks, dolphins and ancient stromatolites. You’ll share all this beauty with free-roaming kangaroos, and just 2 and a half million human inhabitants in this sparsely populated corner of Australia.

The vast size of this state lends it a diverse climate. In the tropical north, the dry winter season (Apr-Sep) is the best time to visit, as high temperatures and humidity during the wet season (Oct-Mar) and take some getting used to. Southern coastal areas have a very pleasant climate, with Perth boasting more sunny days than any other major city in Australia.
